Julia Fisher-Perrier has been chosen by the St. Charles Parish Council to replace Dennis Nuss as the District 7 representative.
Nuss resigned from the council on Dec. 4 to pursue a career opportunity in the Houston area. Nuss was first elected to the District 7 seat in 2007 and was re-elected in 2011. He served as council chairman in 2008 and 2011, and vice chairman this year.
Fisher-Perrier is an insurance agent for Riverlands who has lived in District 7 for 30 years. Her family has roots in the area stretching back to the 1940s. She graduated from Hahnville High School in 1998 and attended the University of New Orleans, where she was a political science/pre-law major.
Fisher-Perrier said she has always had an interest in politics and made a promise to herself to fulfill her interest in government at some point. That time is now.
“My family has a deep-rooted political history in St. Charles Parish, which was exposed to me as a child,” she said. “My grandfather, L.K. Fisher Sr. was a police juror years ago and his involvement was always interesting to me. I planned on getting into government at some point and now the opportunity has presented itself.
“I’m excited to learn, I’m here to help and I am ready to be a part of this great parish’s group of leaders.”
Fisher-Perrier said the main issue she hopes to tackle is the completion of a levee system on the West Bank. She also feels District 7 has been well attended under Nuss’ leadership and she plans to build upon that by making herself available to her constituents.
“I am very fortunate to be taking over at this point,” she said. “I plan to make myself available for all of the District 7 residents’ concerns, needs and issues, no matter how big or small. I started my family here and hope that my son and his friends have a thriving parish to raise their families in as well.
“I want to integrate a fresh outlook to this government and try to continue to help build the parish while maintaining the character of who we are as St. Charles Parish.”
Because the unexpired portion of Nuss’ term is more than one year, Fisher-Perrier will serve on the council until a special election in the spring. The person who wins the election will serve on the council through January 2016. Fisher-Perrier will be allowed to run for the open council seat.
Nuss issued a statement thanking the people of his district for understanding that his family and career are his priorities.
“It has been an honor to serve as your councilman for the past five years, and I wish all the best for my colleagues in parish government and the citizens of St. Charles Parish,” he said.
Nuss said he and his wife made the decision with mixed emotions.
“Our years in St. Charles Parish have been most enjoyable and will always be treasured,” Nuss said. “I am truly grateful for the relationships that I have built and the experiences I’ve had during my time as an elected official, and these will stay with me for years to come.”
Nuss said he is confident that Fisher-Perrier will represent District 7 with fairness, integrity and urgency.
