Fire destroys house in Destrehan

An investigation is continuing into the cause of a fire on the morning of Sept. 8 that destroyed a Destrehan residence.

According to Pedro Estevez, president of the East St. Charles Volunteer Fire Department, a team was dispatched to a house at 220 River Village Drive at about 4:41 a.m. to respond to a large house fire.

Estevez said no one was in the residence as the fire broke out and that the one positive was that nobody was hurt in the catastrophe.

“By the time we arrived, the house was fully engulfed,” he said. “The good thing is that nobody was injured as result of the fire.”

Estevez said that many details about the fire are still unknown and are pending an investigation by the fire marshal.

“Once everything is turned over and they complete the investigation, we’ll know more,” Estevez said.

He said that the firefighters were able to subdue the fire without relative difficulty. The fire was confined to the one house and did not spread to neighboring buildings.

“It was a common structure fire, so we had a solid handle on it,” Estevez said.
