Both the northbound and southbound right lanes and shoulders on the Hale Boggs Bridge will experience closures beginning at 7 p.m. today, July 8, and continuing through 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 9 for placement of concrete barriers.
The work is part of a $30.5 million cable replacement project.
Alan Weber, with the Department of Transportation and Development, said that the lane closures are necessary in order to move concrete barriers over to the southbound lanes to prepare for future construction.
He said construction on the southbound side should begin in mid-August, while work to replace cables on the northbound side should wrap up at that time.
Due to construction, the speed limit on both sides of the bridge will be 60 miles per hour until further notice.
While the bridge is experiencing lane closures, detours include the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Gramercy or the Huey P. Long Bridge in Bridge City.
The cable replacement project began in 2009 with an estimated end date of February 2011. However, because of delays the project will not be complete until around August 2012.
