Multiple fractures send cop to the hospital
Sgt. Bobby Gorman was severely injured when a Kenner man turned into his path of travel near the intersection of U.S. 61 and Riverbend Dr. in St. Rose the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office reported.
Gorman, a nine-year veteran of the force, was escorting a wedding from St. Charles Borremeo to a reception in Harahan in the evening hours of April 24.
According to police reports, as Gorman approached the intersection, Bill Baldwin was traveling westbound in the center lane with a flat tire. Baldwin then pulled out in front of Sgt. Gorman.
When Baldwin pulled out in front of Gorman, the police officer had to abruptly turn his motorcycle, forcing him to fall off. As a result, Gorman had multiple, serious injuries.
Gorman was taking by medics to East Jefferson Hospital where doctors performed several surgeries for multiple leg fractures and fractured wrist. Currently, he is listed in stable condition.
“Gorman under went his second surgery, but we expect him to make a full recovery, said Sheriff Greg Champagne, adding, “He is in our thoughts and prayers.”
Champagne said that the evasive action that Gorman took after Baldwin pulled out in front of him helped lighten the injuries. The evasive action is part of the motorcycle training for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Champagne also said that Gorman is a volunteer for the force.
Officials from Louisiana State Police at Troop B in Kenner said Baldwin’s blood alcohol content and toxicology report are still undetermined.
Baldwin was placed under arrest for reckless operation of a motor vehicle, driving while intoxicated and first-degree vehicle negligent injury. Currently, Baldwin is being held in the Nelson Coleman Correction Center on $155,000 bond set by Judge Granier.
