Drug sweep nets 28 arrests

74-year-old woman among those arrested in 11-month investigation

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office made 28 arrests this week in connection with a narcotics investigation called “Operation Sleigh Ride,” with more arrests still to come.

The round-up, which began Monday afternoon, was the result of an 11-month undercover investigation by the Special Investigations Division of the sheriff’s office into illegal drug sales throughout the parish.

The investigation focused on typical street drugs such as marijuana and cocaine, and also targeted commonly-abused prescription medication.

Sheriff Greg Champagne said that many of those arrested for the distribution of prescription medication lived in the New Sarpy/Norco area, including a 74-year-old woman.

The drugs sold to undercover officers during this operation include marijuana, cocaine, MDMA (Ecstasy), Carisoprodol, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Alprazolam, Diazepam and even a small amount of Heroin.

“More arrests are forthcoming as this investigation continues,” Sheriff Greg Champagne said.

The Herald-Guide will print the complete list of arrestees in the Dec. 25 issue.

In other news, a pair of Montz brothers were arrested after getting into an altercation over their mother, which resulted in one of the brothers allegedly shooting the other one in his right torso, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

According to the police report, 24-year-old Travis Lee Stirgus became upset when his brother, 22-year-old Robert Lee Stirgus, was fighting and wrestling with their mother. T. Stirgus told his brother to get off their mother, and when he didn’t, he allegedly shot him.

Both were arrested, and R. Stirgus was treated and released from River Parish Hospital.
