Student gives police explicit details to verify relationship
Destrehan High School teacher Kimberly Naquin outlined in explicit detail how her sexual relationship began with her then 16-year-old female student in an affidavit with Kenner Police.
Naquin, 26, admitted to the relationship and knowing the student’s age at the time.
During the yearlong relationship that started in October 2014, the two even panicked when they heard news reports that a then unidentified DHS teacher was being investigated for having sex with a student, according to Kenner Police Lt. Brian McGregor. The relationship ended, but then resumed when they learned authorities arrested teachers Shelley Dufresne, 33, and Rachel Respess, 25, and accused them of having sex with a 16-year-old male student at Respess’ Kenner apartment. Both were also DHS teachers accused of having a threesome with a student.
By January 2016, Naquin, a geography teacher at DHS, was under investigation for the relationship she later confessed to having with her student.
“After the relationship with her live-in girlfriend ended in June 2015, Naquin admitted to six more sexual encounters with the student until the relationship ended and Naquin moved back to Destrehan,” according to the affidavit. It further states, “The student provided details about the layout and items inside of Kimberly Naquin’s apartment. The student also provided specific details about cut marks on Kimberly Naquin one would only know if they had seen her in a state of complete undress.”
Authorities say the two had their first sexual encounter on Oct. 30, 2014 at Naquin’s apartment at 3752 Loyola Drive in Kenner. The student told police she drove to the apartment where they had sexual intercourse, which state law also defines as oral sex.
Sexual encounters between the two allegedly continued from January 2015 until August of that year.
“After the January 2015 sexual encounter, the student admitted to numerous other sexual encounters with Naquin at her Kenner apartment over several months before the relationship ended in August 2015, according to the affidavit.
Naquin is accused of having a yearlong sexual relationship with her student at locations mostly in Kenner and St. Charles Parish that included the classroom at DHS, according to a joint investigation by the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office and Kenner Police.
Last Wednesday, Champagne said the student’s relatives contacted the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office. An investigation was initiated and Naquin was arrested last Thursday.
By Friday, Naquin made bond, $75,000, after being arrested and charged with one count each of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile and prohibited sexual conduct between a student and educator in St. Charles Parish. She was transferred to Jefferson Parish where she was charged with another 10 counts of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile.
Naquin faces up to 15 years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine per count under Louisiana statute 14-80 (felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile).
At a press conference held last Friday, Champagne, accompanied by Kenner Police Chief Michael Glaser, said another sexual abuse case involving a teacher and student at DHS happening so soon after the Dufresne-Respess case was “bewildering.”
Naquin, the daughter of St. Charles Parish School Board President Dennis Naquin, is the third DHS teacher accused of sleeping with a student in just over a year. Her father could not be reached for comment on Friday.
Although the student told officers the relationship was consensual, Police Chief Glaser said state law defines her as a minor at age 17 years or younger, which means she cannot consent.
Naquin is an LSU graduate and has taught at DHS for four years, according to her bio on the St. Charles Parish Public Schools’ website. She also co-sponsors the school’s Beta Club chapter.
Ironically, Naquin was arrested at a Beta Club conference in Lafayette.
According to a statement released by St. Charles Parish Public Schools, the school system is fully cooperating with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
“The teacher has been suspended without pay in accordance with district policy and procedures pending the outcome of an investigation,” the statement said. “This is a personnel issue; therefore no other information will be released at this time.”
