Destrehan Plantation festival is one-stop-shop for plants, pets

At the third annual Spring Garden and Pet Show in March, attendees can shop for plants, pet a baby kangaroo, and pamper their pets with treats and accessories, according to Melissa Monica, a spokesperson for Destrehan Plantation.

Attendees can also rescue a shelter dog available for adoption, Monica said. The event will feature Woah Nellie Great Dane Rescue, Metairie Humane Shelter, and Take Paws Rescue.

“I would like to see two more shelters sign up,” Monica said.

In partnership with LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Master Gardeners, Destrehan Plantation will host the garden and pet show from March 29 through March 30.  The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Admission is $5 a person and free for children 5 and under. All proceeds from the event will go to Destrehan Plantation, Monica said.

“The goals of the show are to enhance the quality of life for residents of St. Charles Parish and generate funds to preserve the history related to Destrehan Plantation, a site identified as worthy of preservation by the National Register of Historic Places,” Monica said.

She said 64 vendors are currently signed up for the event, but the organization’s goal is to have 100 vendors. The vendors will sell unique items for porches, patios, yards, and gardens, in addition to botanical-themed jewelry and fine art. Monica said she expects about 5,000 attendees this year.

The kids’ corner of the event will feature a petting zoo on Saturday and an Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday. Mr. Bunny will also make an appearance on Sunday. Other kid-centered activities include spring-themed arts and crafts and face painting.

The food court will sell fine wine, Bloody Mary’s, mimosas and plantation punch. Nola Dukes Jazz Quartet will perform Saturday, March 29 and Peyton Falgoust Solo Acoustical will perform on Sunday.

Monica said attendees should know that the event is pet friendly.

“All pets must be on a non-retractable leash, or in a carrying case or stroller,” she said.

She said the organization is still accepting sponsors for the event. Sponsorships range from $250 to $8,000, according to the application form. The deadline to register is Feb. 28.
