Destrehan man pleads guilty to vehicular homicide

A multiple DWI offender from Destrehan pleaded guilty to charges stemming from an August crash on Airline that led to the death of a 30-year-old woman.

On Aug. 1, 25-year-old Craig Codina, of Destrehan, was driving his 2006 Toyota pickup at a high speed when he rear-ended a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina that was stopped at a red light at the intersection of U.S. 61 and Manson, according to the Louisiana State Police.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 28-year-old Santos Garcia, suffered severe injuries as did his passenger, 30-year-old Sandra Stevens. Stevens passed away a day later from injuries sustained in the accident.

Both Codina and Garcia were impaired at the time of the crash, authorities said.

Codina appeared before Judge Cornelius Regan of the 24th Judicial District Court on Feb. 1 and pled guilty to 3rd offense DWI, vehicular homicide and 1st degree negligent injuring and careless operation.

He will be sentenced on April 6.
