Destrehan man hits wife, child with car then kills himself

A Destrehan man who ran over his wife and child at about 4:40 p.m. Monday (April 4) was later found dead in an apparent suicide.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to an attempted murder at St. Charles Borromeo School in Destrehan, said spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes.

When officers arrived at the scene, it was determined that a mother and her 4-year-old son were struck by a vehicle driven by her estranged husband, Mengkai Zhang, 47, of Destrehan.

The two had recently separated.

While fleeing the scene, the suspect struck two other occupied parked vehicles.

Zhang’s wife and child were taken to the hospital with minor injuries along with another victim, unidentified, who was  in one of the parked vehicles that he struck.

During the investigation, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office learned New Orleans Police Department was working an alleged suicide involving the suspect.

Zhang was positively identified at the scene along with the vehicle used during the attempted murder that occurred in Destrehan.
