Des Allemands house claimed by fire

Four area volunteer departments responded to a fire that extensively damaged a house on Levy Road in Des Allemands.

A 911 call made at 7:27 a.m. last Wednesday reported smoke coming from the wooden structure. The Des Allemands and Paradis volunteer fire departments responded to the scene, said Des Allemands Fire Chief Brian Champagne. Soon after arriving, Champagne said Bayou Gauche and Luling volunteer departments were called for additional manpower.

The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes, he said. The structure, which Champagne estimated is 80 years old, was extensively damaged and likely beyond repair. The occupant of the residence, a renter, was in the hospital at the time of the incident.

Champagne said, without a witness to the fire, a Louisiana Fire Marshal was called to the scene to investigate cause of the fire.
