Best 1st quarter report since 1996, says sheriff
St. Charles Parish through March is down almost eight percent according to statistics released from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Total incidents are at 474, down from 512 in 2006 and 35 percent down from 10 years ago where total crimes have steadily declined year by year since 1996, said Sheriff Greg Champagne.
“In fact, 474 is the lowest number of UCR crimes reported in St. Charles Parish in a first quarter in over ten years,” Champagne said.
There has been one murder reported so far this year, which is up from 0 in 2006. There were 4 total murders in St. Charles Parish last year.
Rapes are down by 40 percent from 1996 but have been staying at 10 or under for the year total since 2004.
Assault numbers are up from 184 in 2006 to 198 incidents in 2007, the highest they’ve been since 2003 when 209 assault incidents were reported.
“The number of assaults has increased since last year but is comparable with past quarters, Champagne said. “The vast majority of assaults are the result of domestic violence between persons living in the same household or those who have a romantic relationship together.”
Robberies for the first quarter are up 75 percent, from 6 in 1996 to 8 in 1998. There have been 40 robberies or less reported in St. Charles since 2002.
Burglaries are down almost 10 percent from the 2006 number of incidents, down 90 to 84. Overall burglary numbers have fluctuated slightly but have stayed relatively the same since 1996.
Thefts are down over 20 percent, from 197 in 2006 to 158 in 2007. It’s the second straight year thefts for the first quarter has been fewer than 200 incidents reported since 1996.
Auto thefts are also down 27 percent from 30 incidents in 2006 to 22 in 2007. Total car thefts were down in 2006 to 122 from 154 total in 2005.
