Crafts, food draw thousands to Destrehan fest

More than 150 crafts vendors from throughout the country will set up shop at Destrehan Plantation this weekend for the storied plantation’s fall festival.

The festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days. A past winner of Southeast Tourism’s Top 20 Events and the Louisiana Fairs and Festivals Classics Award, the fest has become a favorite for those who love Louisiana food, crafts and music.

The crafts will include items such as woodwork, stained glass, candles, housewares and jewelry. The plantation’s Mule Barn will also be stocked with antiques and collectables sold by dealers throughout the state.

Tasty dishes such as cochon de lait poboys, jambalaya, crab cakes and shrimp pasta will be available. The many activities for children include face painting, pony rides and Euro-bungy jumping.

Musical entertainment begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday with a performance by Reed Allemand. He will be followed by Summer Breeze Band, who will play from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. On Sunday, LO2 will play for the crowd from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Admission is $7 for adults and teens while children under 12 get in free. Plantation tours will be available throughout the day for an additional fee of $5 per person.
