Councilman seeks second term as District 1 representative

After serving one term as St. Charles Parish District 1 councilman, Terrell D. Wilson has announced he will seek a second term in the October 24 election.

Wilson said he feels he has represented all of his constituents very well during his first term in office.  District 1 encompasses communities on both sides of the river, specifically Boutte, Hahnville, Killona and Destrehan.

As councilman, Wilson’s goal has been to become proficient in this position by learning as much as he could in the shortest time.

His aim was “to be an effective leader,” which he feels he accomplished.

“Serving the public as an elected official has been his life-long aspiration,” Wilson said, who plans to maintain the same high level of enthusiasm and proficiency if re-elected.

Prior to being elected, Wilson served multiple terms on the St. Charles Housing Authority board in addition to a term on the parish’s Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Those two appointments helped prepare him for public office, he said. He is currently an ex-officio on the Planning Commission, ex-officio on the parish’s Library Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment member and LEPC member on Emergency Operations Center representing the council.

Wilson said he hopes to continue with the next administration and council to continue constructing levees to keep homeowners insurance affordable. He will assist the executive branch of government in spending taxpayer dollars wisely.

“I have been honored with the experience gained while serving the residents of St. Charles in my capacity as councilman,” he said. “I fully understand my duties and what the legislative side of government can do under the Home Rule Charter.”

Wilson said several parks in all four communities in District 1 saw improvements during his term.

“Whether it was a parishwide issue or a district-specific issue, the matters received the same amount of attention,” he said. “The installation of culverts throughout the entire district contributed to improving of drainage systems. Resurfacing of streets in all four communities were also accomplished.”

Wilson said he is proud of his record and the legislation sponsored by him and the legislation he co-sponsored. He said there is still a lot of work to do in funding vital services such as the wastewater and waterworks departments.  The quality of life which we have become accustom too should be maintained,” Wilson said.

He said he is confident he has the ability to work with the next parish president to maintain vital services throughout the parish with the size of government remaining the same. Wilson also said he feels economic development will continue to be an incubator for the parish, but added, he wants business that will become good neighbors environmentally, and consider our locals residents that possess the skill set to fill permanent positions.

“I am looking forward to serving the public four more year,” Wilson said. “I need the support and vote on October 24th to be a voice for continuous improvement.”
