Council asks state to prevent U-turns on portion of U.S. 90

The St. Charles Parish Council is urging the state to install “No U-Turn” signs along Highway 90 in Luling between Barton Avenue and Coronado Drive.

They asked that the signs be placed in both directions at all median openings with the exception of those streets that have signal lights.

In the resolution sent to the State Department of Transportation and Development, the council said that traffic on the highway has increased drastically over the years and that portion of Highway 90 is used by not only residents, but school buses and industry employees.

They say vehicles attempting to make U-turns in the area create hazardous conditions and that placing the signs would result in a reduction of accidents and near accidents while limiting the severity of accidents that do occur.

The council also voted unanimously to support two more roadway requests sponsored by Councilwoman Carolyn Schexnaydre.

One of Schexnaydre’s resolutions asks the state to consider installing a left turn acceleration lane on Airline Drive for residents exiting East Harding Street in New Sarpy. Schexnaydre said that the enormous amount of traffic traveling at high rates of speed has made it dangerous and difficult for vehicles who want to cross over and turn left onto Airline Drive from East Harding.

Her other resolution asked the DOTD to install flashing beacons to the existing “Traffic Signal Ahead” signs on the up ramp of I-310 approaching River Road in Luling.
