A Des Allemands woman is hoping for a new life for two kittens she found when the Bonnet Carre Spillway was flooded in May.
Fate saved the two cats, named Bonnet and Carre, one day two months ago when Thelezia Folse went down to take pictures of the spillway opening.
“My aunt’s cat had died and she gave me her carrier and some food for my cat, so I happened to have that in the trunk of my car,” Folse said. “I was out in the spillway taking some pictures of the flooding when I noticed one of the cats jetting in and out of the grass.”
Folse said the strays seemed scared and without a mother, so she got the cage and food out of her trunk and tried to entice the cats to come to her.
“They were kind of scared, so I walked away to take some pictures. They must have been pretty hungry because when I came back they were eating the food and I caught them,” she said.
Folse thinks that the brother and sister are about 4 months old and she has worked tirelessly to domesticate them.
“Slowly every day I started feeding them and working with them to calm them down,” she said.
Folse plans to have the cats spayed/neutered and updated on shots this week, and she hopes to give them away to a good home.
“I didn’t want anybody fooling with them until I tamed them down,” she said.
Shawn Palmisano, with Animal Control, said that people taking a cat under their wing and paying for shots and neutering just to adopt it out themselves for free is very rare.
“If someone wants to take a cat in and care for it, then that’s great – that’s one less cat at the shelter,” Palmisano said, who added that there are currently about 130 cats in the parish shelter. “But if you can’t, the best thing to do is to bring it in to the shelter.”
Bonnet, a girl, and Carre, a boy, now roam Folse’s home during the day and are two of the best house cats in town.
“Bonnet is very calm and she will come up to you. She likes to get pet on the back,” Folse said. “Carre, I get a kick out of him. He sits on his hind legs and holds onto the bar of the cage – he’s a little more lively.
“They’re good kittens – that’s why I couldn’t just leave them out there.”
