Boat floats will light up Bayou Gauche Island during Christmas parade

Decorated boats will light up Bayou Gauche Island on Saturday during the annual Christmas on the Bayou parade.

The holiday-themed flotilla is scheduled to depart the Bayou Gauche pump station on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.

Fireworks will blast into the air at the beginning of the parade and again after the boats make their way to  Fisherman’s Wharf.

Judges will name the three boats with the best decorations, and those boats will receive a cash prize.Typically, about 15 boats participate in the parade. Organizer Loretta Matherne said there is still room for anyone who wants to take part.

“Those who want to be in the parade just need to have their decorated boats at the Bayou Gauche pump station by 5:30 p.m. on Saturday,” she said.

There is no fee to float in the parade.

Matherne said that the event draws families because of the many decorated boats that shine through the night while riders toss beads to the crowd.

“A lot of it has to do with people meeting their friends and having a good time,” she said.
