Motorists can expect to see workers switch from the northbound to the southbound side of the Hale Boggs Bridge in mid to late August, according to the Department of Transportation and Development.
Earlier this month, the right lanes on both sides of the bridge were closed to make way for concrete barriers being moved to the southbound side. The move was necessary to get ready for workers to begin replacing cables on the southbound side in August.
The work is part of a $30.5 million cable replacement project which should be complete in 10 to 12 months, according to Alan Weber with DOTD.
Weber said that about 30 of the bridge’s 72 cables have been replaced so far.
Weber said that work on the northbound side of the bridge should wrap up in late August.
He said drivers should expect more single-lane closures as work continues on the bridge and at least one more full-bridge closure which he expects to take place in January.
While construction continues, the speed limit on the bridge is reduced to 60 miles per hour.
