Arts Awareness fest to showcase local talent

St. Charles Parish Public Schools is known for being ahead of the curve when it comes to its performing and creative arts program.

The annual Arts Awareness Festival is aimed at showing the public just why that is.

The festival will go on for the eighth straight year Saturday as festival goers will see examples of how students, teachers, and the community of St. Charles Parish produce, perform, and value the arts in our public schools.

“People know we have arts and drama in our schools, but those are just words,” said St. Charles Parish Public Schools Director of Special Programs and the Arts Mary Lou Sumrall. “We want the public to see what happens in those classes and to see the arts in action.”

The festival is free and will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Professional Learning Center in Luling. Throughout the day on multiple stages, students from all schools will perform theatrical, dance, and musical selections. In addition, attendees will have opportunities to create a variety of 2D visual art.

Paintings and other visual art will be on display and for sale.

Theatrical presentations will entertain the crowd with scenes from school plays.

Musical selections will be performed by choirs, soloists and bands with special presentations by wind, percussion and brass ensembles featuring students from kindergarten through high school.

The public is invited to join in the fun at the visual arts hands-on studio and as a performer in one of the several percussion ensembles.

“Every year it gets bigger,” Sumrall said. “It has been greatly supported by the community.”

St. Charles Parish Public Schools earned national recognition for its creation of the festival.

The school system was named the grand prize winner in the 5,000- to 20,000-student enrollment category in the 20th annual Magna Awards program.

The Magna Awards honor school systems for programs that advance student learning and encourage community involvement in schools.

Concessions will be available for purchase. For more information, contact (985) 785-3144 or msumrall@stcharles.k12.la.us.
