Ama man charged with killing pit bull, threatening girlfriend

A 50-year-old Ama man, who had three guns in his residence, allegedly shot his own pit bull before threatening to kill his girlfriend and turn the gun on himself, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Police got a call about a disturbance and went to  151 Michael Street in Ama last week. When the officers knocked on the door of the trailer, it opened and they were able to see Elvis Mixon holding a semi-automatic handgun in his right hand.

The officers immediately asked Mixon, who was only wearing a T-shirt, to drop the gun and were able to detain him.

When Mixon’s girlfriend of 22 years was questioned, she told authorities that Mixon had shot their dog in front of her and then disposed of the remains in the dumpster in front of the trailer. When she arrived back at the trailer, Mixon was holding a silver handgun, waving it in her direction and telling her that “I can kill you if I want to and myself too.”

The woman said that Mixon then put the gun to his head and into his mouth.

While the officers were searching the house, they located a .38 caliber revolver and a 12 gauge shotgun in addition to the 9mm semi-automatic handgun that Mixon was holding.
Officers also discovered 8.2 grams of marijuana at the residence.

Mixon was booked with the possession of marijuana, the use of a firearm, aggravated cruelty to animals, illegal use of a weapon and aggravated assault with a firearm.
