Crusading sister dies before finding justice
Alyce Mongrue loved her sister, Ginger Allen. When Allen was killed in September 2010, Mongrue was left with many questions but few answers. Mongrue passed away on Friday before she could receive any of the answers she had been waiting for.
Mongrue, 48, died in her sleep, according to family members.
Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said in November that there is a warrant to arrest the suspect in Allen’s murder, Gary Farrell. But Farrell, 42, cannot be charged because he is in a coma after allegedly shooting himself on the day of Allen’s death.
“As far as we know, he is still in a coma,” LaGrange said, but he could not further discuss Farrell’s medical condition.
Authorities said that Farrell, a Luling resident, shot and killed Allen on Sept. 22 before calling police dispatchers to report the crime, causing a six-hour standoff that ended when he allegedly shot himself in the head.
At the time, Mongrue said that Farrell and Allen had been long-time friends and that she did not understand why her sister had been killed. She said that she did know Farrell to have manic depression, or bipolar disorder and that he had been romantically interested in her sister, but that Allen was never interested and the two had never dated.
In an interview last November, Mongrue said that she was “blown away” by her sister’s death.
“I’m still freaking out over it. I still have my bad days,” she said during the interview.
Funeral services for Mongrue were held on Monday with private burial to take place at a later date.
