Accident claims life of Destrehan man

A multi-vehicle car accident claimed the life of 88-year-old Theodore Miestchovich of Destrehan Monday morning, according to Louisiana State Police.

The accident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. on U.S. Hwy. 61 north at North Cumberland St. According to state police spokeswoman Melissa Matey, Miestchovich was driving a 2002 Buick Century south on North Cumberland when he drove onto the highway and was hit in the left lane by a 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by 28-year-old Landry Everson of Metairie.

After impact, the Buick spun around toward the right side of US 61 and struck two unoccupied parked vehicles, Matey said.  It then traveled over the median, across the south bound lanes of US 61 and came to a stop by the roadway.

Miestchovich was pronounced dead on the scene.  He was wearing a seat belt.

Everson and his front seat passenger, 20-year-old Davianna Stokes of LaPlace, were not wearing seat belts and were transported to University Medical Center with moderate injuries.

Matey said impairment is not suspected and that toxicology tests were to be completed on Miestchovich following an autopsy. Everson submitted to a blood test, which will be conducted by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.  The crash remains under investigation.
