750 attend funeral for DHS graduate killed in car wreck

Family plans to start youth foundation to keep son’s memory alive

Norco resident Daniel Roussel passed away after sustaining injuries in a car accident last week, but his family is hoping to keep his memory alive through a memorial foundation.

Roussel, 28, was killed at about 10:20 p.m. on Oct. 16 after a one-car crash on Goodhope Street – less than a mile from his home. Authorities said he was not wearing a seat belt when his SUV flipped off the road into a ditch.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

While his family is still in shock from the tragic accident, relatives say they will try to start an awareness program in his name to help the young people of St. Charles Parish.

“His parents are involved with youth in the community…in honor of (Daniel), they’re trying to put together something that would basically keep his name alive and benefit the youth in St. Charles Parish,” said Mary Ventura, Roussel’s aunt. “You can’t do anything to change the tragic accident, but why not try to take that opportunity to make something positive from the tragedy.”

The family is not yet sure of the exact direction the foundation will take, but they know it will involve helping the youth in the parish.

“Daniel was a young man who considered others before himself. Helping the youth of this community would have been something he would be proud to be a part of,” Ventura said. “He was sincerely loved by many and had the ability to impact lives; may that continue and keep his memory alive.”

Ventura said that about 750 people attended Roussel’s memorial service, which is a testament to how many other lives he touched during his own life. Roussel was a Destrehan High School graduate.

The family is asking that donations to help start the impact awareness program be made to the Daniel K. Roussel III Memorial Fund at any Capital One Bank.
