Many arrested in undercover operation have long records
Seventy suspected drug dealers have been tracked down and put into handcuffs as the result of an undercover operation the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office called “Operation Krewe of Dope.”
For the last year, undercover detectives have been making documented street buys of illegal narcotics. That led to 70 suspected dealers being arrested in every community of the parish for street-level drug dealing. The drugs dealt include marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, oxycodone and heroin.
The Sheriff’s Office is hoping to arrest nearly 30 more suspects in the coming week, Sheriff Greg Champagne said.
Almost all of the people arrested have extensive records as repeat offenders, with one man, 32-year-old Kendrick “Pops” Smith of Boutte, having been arrested 90 times. Fifteen of those arrests were for drugs. Another, 51-year-old Kevin Smith of Montz, has been arrested 65 times, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
So far, 21 of those arrested in the undercover operation have been arrested 20 times or more.
“This is not the first time many of these people have been arrested and something has to happen to shut that revolving door,” spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes said. “The thing is, most crimes are related to drugs. People steal money for drugs, rob people for drugs.
“A lot of times, it can all be traced back to drugs.”
Eleven of those arrested live in Boutte Estates.
“We have areas that are more prone to drug activity, but I don’t want to put a stigma on that community because there are a lot of good people that live there,” Yoes said. “We want to help clean up this parish, and we are doing our jobs to make sure that happens.”
As for the drug activity, 46 of the arrests dealt with cocaine, while 20 arrests were because of marijuana. Two of the suspects were arrested for heroin and one was arrested for ecstasy. There was also an arrest for oxycodone.
“As far as the drug situation in our parish goes, we are in the New Orleans metropolitan area, and we have a lot of the same problems with drugs that they do,” Yoes said. “There is no jurisdiction line when it comes to drugs.”
In December 2008, the Sheriff’s Office made more than 30 arrests in connection with an undercover sting called “Operation Sleigh Ride.” That investigation also focused on typical street drugs such as cocaine and marijuana, but also targeted commonly-abused prescription medication.
The drugs sold to undercover officers during that operation included marijuana, cocaine, ecstacy, carisoprodol, oxycodone, hydrocodone, alprazolam, diazepam and even a small amount of heroin.
