Luling’s Rathborne Park remains closed until Saturday, Sept. 13 while St. Charles Parish removes 30 trees in the area that are considered a safety hazard.
René Schmidt, county agent for St. Charles Parish, recently evaluated the park after a tree fell last week onto bleachers and a fence that surround the baseball field. He found that 30 trees needed to be removed in order to ensure the safety of residents who visit the park.
“They had a lot of problems like insect damage, structural problems and some of them lacked enough canopy to support the size of the tree,” Schmidt said. “There was a safety factor involved because when you have issues of decay, you never know when that top branch will give way. These were trees you wouldn’t want in your yard.”
Schmidt said that more than half of the trees were located near the walking path.
Councilwoman Julia Fisher-Perrier said she hopes the parish will be able to replace some of the trees that have been removed in the near future.
“The foliage plays a big part in the character and quality of our park. For now, we will just have a little more sunshine as we play safely,” she said.
