2,500 donated toys make Christmas special for hundreds of children

Distributing 2,500 toys wasn’t just an act of generosity, but an incredible one that allowed giving additional presents at Friday’s Killona toy giveaway.

“This is giving,” said an enthused Keltric Lockett, who is on his third year heading the community event. “At the end, we were giving them extra toys.”

Lockett, along with his wife, Sarah, and fellow organizers Brandon Isaac and his wife, Shante’, generated enough cash donations to provide more than 2,500 toys to local children who attended the giveaway at Scott’s Grocery.

Drawing more than 500 people, the Killona event also marked a record crowd.

“I was born and raised there, and I always wanted to give back to the community,” Lockett said. “It’s why I try to do this every year – to make sure all the kids get something for Christmas.”

His dedication to Killona is shared.

Major contributors for making the giveaway possible included NFL football player LaRon Byrd of Hahnville, who also brought toys to single-parent children in the parish, along with St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne, Parish President Larry Cochran, Wade Scott and Ashton Tom Noel, owners of the Killona Landfill, and Raymond Coleman, a local landowner.

Adding to the children’s excitement, Byrd took photographs with many of them, Lockett said.
