Louisiana State Police investigated an early morning four-vehicle crash on Hwy. 90 at the St. Charles Parish line that claimed the lives of two people, one from Des Allemands. Two other people, both from Luling, were injured.
Derrick J. Paul, 31, of Des Allemands was killed May 21 on Hwy. 90 between Live Oak Drive and milepost 251 at the parish line after he was ejected from the 1995 Mazda 626 he was driving at the time of the accident.
Paul also had a North Carolina man in the backseat of the Mazda; Corey L. Jones, 18, who was also ejected from the car and died at the scene. According to State Police Troop B’s Joseph Piglia, the Mazda was traveling westbound on Hwy. 90 in the right lane when Paul lost control of the vehicle causing him to cross the median.
The Mazda went straight into the path of a 1993 Ford Van driven Louis R. Guerra of Luling.
The collision split the Mazda in two, authorities said, leaving half of the car on the median and the other half on Hwy. 90 eastbound.
Guerra’s Ford van rolled over after hitting the Mazda finally coming to rest on Hwy. 90 heading east.
Guerra and Jennifer A. Young of Luling, a passenger in the front seat of the Mazda, both suffered serious injuries and were transported to University Hospital for treatment.
A Chevrolet and a Ford Truck both struck the subsequent damage from the wreck immediately after the initial incident but no injuries were reported from occupants of wither vehicle.
Piglia reported nobody in the Mazda was wearing a seat belt and authorities suspect speed and driver impairment were both factors in the crash.
Senior Trooper John Neal is continuing his investigation.
