14 cars burglarized on first night of summer vacation

During the first night of summer vacation, 14 vehicles were burglarized in Destrehan and Montz, according to St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne.

Last Wednesday, Champagne said that six juveniles were arrested by deputies in the Ormond Subdivision after they allegedly burglarized eight vehicles in the Dunleith Drive area. Items were taken from the vehicles, which were all unlocked, at around 11 p.m.

“An alert resident noticed the activity and called 911,” Champagne said. “Quick responding deputies made the arrests.”

A few hours later, Champagne said that at least six more unlocked vehicles were burglarized in Montz in and around the Country Cottage Subdivision.

Items such as firearms, wallets, purses, cell phones and GPS units were among the things stolen.

Additionally, Champagne said that several juveniles were arrested for curfew violations and some adults were charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors.

“Folks, we are serious about curfew enforcement in light of the ongoing theft problem,” Champagne said. “We will also be arresting parents who knowingly allow their juvenile children (16 and under) to remain out on the public streets after 10 p.m.”

Champagne said a task force of plain clothes deputies will patrol the parish at night looking for curfew violators.
