St. Charles Parish Council approved $8 million in Gulf Opportunity Zone bonds to allow Prager Inc. to relocate its offices from New Orleans to St. Rose by July 2008, creating 15 to 20 new jobs for machinists.
“We were housed in New Orleans for the past 110 years, but our company is growing so fast that we needed to expand,” Dave Podgorski, project manager for Prager, said.
Podgorski expects to hire 15 to 20 permanent employees once the company that makes gears and gearboxes relocates to St. Rose.
“Most of the new hires will have to have machinists background or training,” Podgorski told the Herald-Guide.
Councilman Clayton “Snookie” Faucheux says the company’s move is welcome.
“This is good for the parish,” he continued.
“We have added at least six new businesses since St. Charles Parish was included as a part of the GO Zone Act.”
The GO Zone legislation gives special tax breaks for capital investments in areas affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
In other council news:
– Council approved a rezoning for Faith, Praise and Deliverance Temple in New Sarpy, from the open land zoning classification to the C-2 general commercial classification, which will allow the church to expand its building.
– Heard from the YMCA of plans to open facilities in three locations, St. Charles, St. James, and St. John Parishes. (Editor’s note: In a future issue, the Herald-Guide will take a closer look at the YMCA’s plans for the River Parishes. )
– Parish President Albert Laque proclaimed the week of May 13 through 19, as “Alcohol- and other Drug-Related Birth Defects Awareness Week.”
