11-year-old leads police on high-speed chase

An 11-year-old led State Police on an early-morning, high-speed chase down the interstate in St. Charles Parish last week. The chase began when a trooper attempted to pull a 1996 jeep over for traveling 80 mph in a 60 mph zone. The driver refused to yield and instead continued south on Interstate 310 near Airline Highway.

During the pursuit, the 11-year-old forced several vehicles onto the shoulder of the road in an attempt to get away. Authorities say he stopped in the parking lot of Burger King at the intersection of U.S. 90 and Ruth Street in Boutte and ran into the restaurant calling for his mother.

According to a statement released from the Troop B- office, the parents had allowed the child to use the vehicle to bring medicine, and to chauffer his disabled father around, for the past six months.

His parents, Leona M. Calloway, 32, and Rodney Brown, 46, face charges of improper supervision of a minor and allowing an unlicensed minor to drive. The driver faces charges of felony flight from an officer, reckless driving, speeding, passing on the shoulder, improper lane usage and driving without a license.
