Dowouis receives top honors

Alyssa Ann Dowouis was one of two students who won top honors in South Louisiana Electric Cooperative Association’s annual Rural Electric Youth Tour Writing Competition.

She is a senior at Central Lafourche High School in Raceland and is the daughter of Rhonda and Darren Dowouis of Raceland. The granddaughter of MaryAnn Fremen of Luling and Nancy and Roland Dowouis of Des Allemands. She is the great-granddaughter of Josephine Pitre of Luling.

The winning students each received a one-week, all expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. as part of the contest prizes. Alyssa traveled to Baton Rouge, March 26 through 28, to attend a youth leadership conference and tour the Big Cajun Power Plant in New Rhodes, the Louisiana State Capitol and the Governor’s Mansion.

The SLECA students left for Washington June 13 and returned June 20. They joined students and chaperones from electric cooperatives and the Association of Louisiana Electric Cooperatives in Baton Rouge where the trip began. While in Washington, the students joined more than 1,600 other students from 37 states for the 36th National Rural Electric Youth Tour.

Tregre receives memorial scholarship

The Abigayl Breaux Memorial Scholarship for 2008 was awarded to Kylie Tregre, of Hahnville High School.

She is pictured with Wayne and Denise Breaux, parents of the late Abigayl Breaux.

Abigayl’s family started the scholarship in 2005, after she was killed, in an effort to keep Abigayl’s memorial alive.
