Teachers complete summer internships

Prior to the beginning of the 2013-14 school year, 12 teachers and three counselors from St. Charles Parish Public Schools completed School-to-Career summer internships at several local industries in order to bring their experiences back into their classrooms.

The teachers learned about the various careers associated with each industry including the organization of the industry, the education and/or certification requirements, the occupational outlook, the working conditions and advancement opportunities.

Following the internships, the teachers and counselors developed lesson plans integrating their experiences, the District Learner Goals and the Common Core Curriculum. The participants also earned continuing learning units.

Lesson plan titles ranged from “Law Enforcement,” “Algebraic Proportions and Sequences in Medical Field,” “Careers in Our Community”,” “River Parishes Tourist Attractions,” “Learning is Lifelong,” “Crimes Past and Present,” “Name a Health Career” and “Exploring Careers in Hospitality and Tourism.”

Hosts of the summer internships were Destrehan Plantation, Norco Manufacturing Complex, St. Charles Parish Hospital and the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office. Career development facilitators Aurora Romero, at Hahnville High School, and Stefanie Ward, at Destrehan High School, assisted the teachers in the development of the lesson plans.
