Summer reading programs begin June 1 at library

St. Charles Parish Library announces the 2009 teen reading program, “iLibrary.” Teens ages 12 to 18 can go to the library to register beginning June 1. The program runs until July 31. Teens joining the program will play “Book Club Bingo.” And there are lots of ways teens can complete the program – reading books and graphic novels, attending library programs, listening to audio books, reading blogs, visiting the Library Teen MySpace page, and writing book reviews for the “Teen Newsletter” – just to name a few.

Bingo cards for participating teens will be kept on file at each branch. Teens may call or visit any library location to request their cards be stamped as they complete activities. Teens complete in “Book Club Bingo” by filling at least two of any combination of rows, columns or diagonals on their bingo cards with stamps. A medal will be available to participants who complete the program beginning June 15.

Events for teens this summer include Comic Book Workshops and the Get Graphic! Collaborative Comic Book Project, Hip-Hop Dance Lessons, Belly Dancing Workshops, Club Anime meetings, Candy Sushi making, Runescape Tournaments, Movies, Homemade Bottle Rockets, Andes Climbing Walls, Edible Wetlands Adventure, Pharaoh’s Curse Mystery Game, Bicycle Safety Program, Outdoor Game Daze, Pictionary Challenge, and Wii Tournaments.

Craft activities include making tie-dye journals, recycled CD clocks, jewelry making, decorating birdhouses, making water bottle holders, duct tape wallets, and lava lamps.

Children programs

St. Charles Parish Library also announces the 2009 summer reading program, “Once Upon a Time.” Children ages 2 to 12 may come to the library to register beginning June 1.

The program runs until July 31. Children who join the summer reading program will receive reading logs with a chart to keep track of how many minutes they read each day.

Each child who completes the program will receive a personalized achievement certificate. Bright teal colored T-shirts and book bags with the “Once Upon a Time” logo will be available for purchase.

Certificates will be available to participants who complete the program beginning June 15.

Programs, which include the performing arts, visual arts, literature, sports, and science, are designed to show children ages 2 to 12 that they can have fun and succeed by reading.

The goal is to foster self-confidence, creativity, and imaginative thinking in St. Charles Parish youth.

A rock-climbing wall, craft programs and games are also featured.

Fifteen “Reading Duck” summer reading mascots will be hidden in local businesses and public offices in St. Charles Parish.

Children who find a mascot may bring it to any branch and receive a free T-shirt or book bag. Guess-jar winners will also receive a free t-shirt or book bag. Guess jars will be located in each branch.
