Jenny Bourg has grown the state’s largest cabbage and beet.
The cabbage tipped the scales at over 44 pounds. The beet was over 24 pounds. Her Facebook page, where she shares tips and tricks of backyard gardening, has over 13,000 followers.
On Saturday, April 5, Bourg will share her gardening tips with St. Charles Parish residents at a gardening seminar at the West Regional Library in Luling from 2 p.m.-3 p.m.
Lauren Campo Pitz, assistant director for St. Charles Parish Library, said this is the first time Bourg has hosted a seminar at the library.
“But it’s definitely not the first gardening or plant workshop we have hosted,” Pitz said. “We have an ongoing partnership with the LSU AgCenter, and we have worked with them for many years to provide community members with gardening guidance and support for growing things in our area.”
She said the response to those workshops are always very positive.
“Actually, one of the main reasons that we are hosting this event with Jenny Bourg is because the people who have attended these workshops asked about the possibility of having her as a speaker,” Pitz said.
She said the seminar is open to seasoned vegetable gardeners as well as beginners.
“We hope that attendees take away something that will be useful to them, no matter where they are on their gardening journey,” Pitz said. “Beginners will benefit from Jenny’s experiences and the things she’s learned over her many years of gardening, and more experienced gardeners will be able to ask questions about issues they have and learn new techniques to help their gardens thrive.”
Alyssa Tarrant, an LSU AgCenter horticulture extension agent serving St. Charles Parish, said the event is an opportunity to not only connect with Bourg, but with other gardeners in the area.
“You can learn gardening by the book, but those lessons don’t always translate to local conditions,” Tarrant said. “In these cases, your neighboring gardeners are an invaluable resource. If you are struggling with something in your garden, chances are your neighbors are too. They may even have the solution you’ve been unable to find elsewhere.”
The River Region Master Gardeners will also attend the event and will be available to answer general gardening questions.
