For almost 50 years, the St. Charles Women’s Club has been uniting parishioners in service to the community.

A few times during the year, the general public can join in on the fun by participating in the club’s events, such as next week’s Autumn Auction.

This year’s auction will take place on Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Presbyterian Church on Lakewood Drive in Luling. The auction will begin at 9 a.m. and last until about noon.

Anthony Lucia from Roussel’s Fine Jewelry in Boutte will be the auctioneer and the public is invited to attend.

Items up for bidding include seasonal wreathes, decorations, jewelry, small furniture, clothing, lamps, homemade food and more. Some auction items are pictured here.

The auction is one of the club’s major annual fundraising events, but the group does so much more than that.

The club has over 100 members and is made up of St. Charles natives as well as women who have moved to the area from all over the world, giving members the opportunity to network and learn about different cultures.

The women provide scholarships to local high school graduates and funds to numerous area non-profit organizations. They work diligently throughout the community volunteering as readers at local schools, hosting events with the local senior centers and more.

Each monthly meeting is also a time to collect food and items for local food banks, charities and nursing homes. The group donates soup labels and box tops to local schools that can be exchanged for funding and other support from national companies.

While each member is actively trying to help the parish flourish, they are also trying to have fun in the process.

The club is part philanthropy, part social, and Belcher said that members know how to have a good time.

“It gets to be a lot of fun,” she said.

The women get together each month for movie nights, book groups, cooking – and eating – groups and more.

Over the years, these women have seen each other through birthdays and graduations, illnesses and tragedies.

Belcher said that even when members move away, they often stay members because their bond with the community is so strong.

Belcher said that the club is always looking for enthusiast women to join in on the fun. Membership is open at any time and to everyone woman in the community.
