Young people from across Louisiana recently gathered on the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge to compete in the 93rd annual 4-H University. 4-H University (formerly 4-H Short Course) allows 4-H members to compete in over 40 different project related contests and possibly be named 4-H State and Blue Ribbon winners.
Approximately 1600 members and 200 volunteers participated in the activities.
This year was the fourth year of Clover College. This is another area in which non-competitive students participate in workshops such as Service Learning, Communication, Character Counts, Camp Counselor Training, Theatre Arts and Sportsmen’s Paradise.
This allows 4-H members to experience 4-H University without the competitive pressure.
In addition to participating in their selected project area, 4-H members also elected State 4-H officers and representatives.
Jonas Augustine, a Destrehan High School 4-H member, was elected the State 4-H President.
Augustine previously served as the State 4-H Vice-President and as an officer in his school 4-H clubs since 5th grade.
As President, Augustine will preside over several meetings during the year and 4-H University in 2008.
Augustine was also a member of the State 4-H Executive Board, a Youth Trustee on the State 4-H Foundation Board and a member of the State 4-H Federal Review Committee.
This past year he addressed the LSU Board of Supervisors at their fall meeting. He also addressed the state livestock show winners at the awards program in February.
Raven Scott, a Hahnville High student, was selected to serve on the State 4-H Executive Committee as a Regional Representative. She was named representative of the South Central/Crescent Region.
Seventeen St. Charles 4-H members participated in the event. Four of these members Blue Ribboned (placed in the top ten) in their contest. The top placing members included:
Jonas Augustine-State Winner-4-H Has Talent, Courtney Rachal-Blue Ribbon-Public Speaking-Any Other Subject, and Raven Scott and Ebonie Cooper-Blue Ribbon-Solutions Unlimited. Other students receiving recognition in their contest area were Secret Cammon and George Hill-each $250 Wetlands Grants and Kelsey McGill-Most Coordinated-Fashion Casual.
Other participants and their category were: Kyle Ching-Outdoor Skills, Mason Dupre-Public Speaking, LeAnna Wilson-Fashion Ready-to-Wear, and Michelle Bourgeois-Dog Care.
Members attending Clover College were: Jintrelle Tassara-La: The Sportsmen’s Paradise, Ben Alday and Nikeo Brown-Taking Teen Clubs to the Top, Teri Linton-Youth Mentoring Friends and Perry Macaluso and Rachel Tastet-Camp Counselor Training.
Volunteers assisting the group were: Mamie McMillion, Don McMillion, Mary Triche, Dee McGill, Jared Hirst, and Charles Wilson.
