SCP Hospital’s awards banquet for volunteers

St. Charles Parish Hospital hosted an awards banquet for members of its staff of volunteers in order to express the hospital’s appreciation.

Receiving awards for being in the top three in hours of service were Bernice Newman, Mona Gassen, and Betty Tregre.

Newman also received an award having the most hours of service.

Also recognized at the banquet was Ruth Schroeder for providing St. Charles Parish Hospital with 25 wonderful years of service.

Volunteers provide many important services including the operation of the hospital’s gift shop, manning the information desk, serving refreshments to patients and visitors, and providing support services for daily operation of the hospital.

Funds raised by the volunteers are used for many projects throughout the hospital.

St. Charles Parish Hospital’s Patient Education and Resource Library is fully equipped with videos, computerized information, educational models and other teaching materials donated by St. Charles Parish Hospital Auxiliary.

Every year the volunteers present a scholarship to one student from both Destrehan and Hahnville High Schools who meet the criteria and are interested in pursuing a career in medicine.

Brian Lombardo, recipient of the scholarship in 2004 and nursing student at Nicholls State University, attended the banquet to give the group an up-date on his experience since receiving the scholarship.

Volunteering presents opportunities for making new friends, learning new skills, and receiving great satisfaction from helping others which is why many people find it fulfilling.

“It is a great way to give back to your community,” said Betty Tregre, Auxiliary Vice President. “After working for all of hose years, you don’t want to sit around the house.

“ It is a great way to get out and meet people.”
