Royalty to be crowned at the Queen of Hearts Pageant

River Parishes Fall Festival royalty will be crowned on Saturday afternoon at the Queen of Hearts Pageant. The 51st Miss Queen of Hearts and Teen Queen of Hearts will be crowned at the festival.

Amanda Sullivan, 2008 Miss Queen of Hearts, and Brooke Stein, 2008 Teen Queen of Hearts, will be giving up their year-long rein.

The pageant has a long history with the festival and the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Norco.

Pageant Director Doreen Becnel-Landry said that it is hard to remember how long the pageant has been running.

“My mother, GayNell Becnel, was the director of the pageant and she ran it for many, many years,” Becnel-Landry said. “It had a hiatus for about six years and then I took it over. It’s probably about 40 years old.”

The contestants will still be crowned as the 51st queens in order to keep in line with the festival, Becnel-Landry said. Becnel-Landry has been the pageant’s director for 15 years and has been involved in pageants for 25 years.

The pageant consists of four divisions: the Baby-Jr. Miss division begins at 12 p.m. and the Miss, Teen and Ms. divisions begin at 4:30 p.m.

Each contestant will participate in three competitions: Interview, Self Introduction and Evening Gown.

Deadline for entry into the Miss, Teen and Ms. Divisions is 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12.

Admission to the pageant for spectators is $3.

The money raised during the pageant benefits the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Parish, just as it did when the pageant originally began.
