Elaine Fitzgerald, adviser for the Hahnville Engineering and Robotics Club received a $4,000 grant from Entergy Corporation in March.
The grant will cover tools and materials needed to design and program a robot for the FIRST Bayou Regional Robotics competition.
This past year although they did not place in the regional competition, they were invited to participate in FIRSTS national competition.
The Engineering and Robotics Club placed 34th out of 60 contestants regionally and are headed to compete nationally.
The goal of this project was to allow students to participate in the design and engineering of a robot that meets certain specifications and limitations.
Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, The Engineering and Robotics Club of 21 students worked together to raise funds, design a team “brand”, learn teamwork skills, and build a programed robot to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.
The materials provided through the grant allowed them to work together learning valuable skills as they worked through the design process to build the robot.
