Ra’Janae Taiyan Morris was named the recipient of the 2018 Robert C. Menezes Sr. Memorial Community Scholarship on May 2 at Hahnville High School’s awards ceremony.

The $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated leadership abilities, academic achievement, and contributions to the local community.

The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior selected by the school and is in memory of Bob Menezes, who was coach and later principal of Hahnville High School for twenty years until his death from cancer in 1975.

“We’re very pleased to award this scholarship to such a deserving young leader,” said Doris Menezes, wife of the late principal and coach, who made the presentation of the award at the awards ceremony.  “With her academic achievements, her service in student organizations, and in her commitment to community service, Ms. Morris demonstrated why she deserves this scholarship. Her accomplishments are truly an inspiration to others.”

Morris graduated summa cum laude, was an AP scholar, and was on the Principal’s and Superintendent’s Lists.  She was a member of the National Honor Society, serving as President her senior year, the Beta Club, and participated in the band color guard.

Morris served as President of the HHS 4-H and the St. Charles Parish 4-H Jr. Leader Club as well as Chairman of the Louisiana 4-H State Fashion Board.  She also was a volunteer with the Red Cross, St. Charles Parish Hospital, Alligator Festival, Christmas Toys Drive, and the OctoberFest at Mimosa Elementary.

She is the daughter of Tanya Mott of Luling.

Morris plans to attend Tulane University and major in neuroscience.
