R.K. Smith Middle received $15k grant

R.K. Smith Middle School is dedicated to providing students with the necessary tools for them to succeed. But a top-notch education and activities, such as after-school tutoring programs and field trips, come at a cost. So, the school depends on grants and donations from outside sources, such as the Monsanto Fund.

The Luling Monsanto site has helped the school receive funds for the past several years. R.K. Smith was presented a $15,000 donation from the Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company, at a presentation at the school in October. The grant will be utilized to support a school improvement plan that focuses on reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies.

“Not only have we received grants from the Monsanto Fund for the past several years, but also their employees help with tutoring our students after school and serving as mentors,” said Harold Blood, R.K. Smith principal.

Meghan Diederich, of Monsanto, was also excited to play a part in the donation.

“The students of today are the future of Monsanto,” Diederich said. “It’s our responsibility to ensure educational standards are high.”

The Luling Monsanto site is proud to have R.K. Smith Middle School as its “Adopt-A-School” partner. This grant is part of a broad commitment by the Monsanto Fund, which is focused on strengthening farming communities, as well as the communities where Monsanto’s employees live and work.
