You can call her Lena Dufrene, but if you’re a member of the Life Fellowship Community Church in Bayou Gauche, then you’re probably calling this 82-year-old volunteer “Grandmother.”

Dufrene has volunteered at the church’s annual summer Bible camp since it first opened its doors to kids across the parish eight years ago and is the oldest volunteer.

Children’s Pastor Bridgette Domengeaux says that everyone calls Dufrene “Grandmother” and also adds that she never misses a day of work and continues to help with church activites and functions long after the summer camp ends.

Nearly 200 hundred children attended the free camp that is made possible by 40 hard-working volunteers like Dufrene.

From snowballs and waterslides to pig lip eating contests and friends hanging out, the Herald-Guide party shot from the event pictured at right gives you an inside look at what being a “Grandmother” at the church is all about.
