Thirteen teachers and two counselors from St. Charles Parish Public Schools completed School-to-Career summer internships at several local industries in order to bring their experiences back into their classrooms.
The lesson plan titles ranged from “Genetic Engineering in World Agriculture”, “A Journey of 21st Century Skills”, “Introduction to Careers/Career Drive-In”, “Factors of Production/Business Structure Simulation”, “Can I Afford the Payment on My Dream Car”, “What Education and/or Skills Do I Need to Work in a Manufacturing Facility?”, “Destrehan Plantation Timeline” and “Proportions and Drug Conversions”.
The hosts of the summer internships were Cospolich, Destrehan Plantation, St. Charles Parish Hospital and Monsanto.
Career Development Facilitator Aurora Romero at Hahnville High School assisted the teachers in the development of the lesson plans.
The teachers learned about the various careers associated with each industry including the organization of the industry, the education and/or certification requirements, the occupational outlook, the working conditions and the advancement opportunities.
Besides getting ideas for lessons, teachers said internships give them credibility with the students and helps them to understand how graduates will use the information they are being taught.
Following the internships, the teachers and counselors developed lesson plans integrating their experiences, the 21st Century Work Skills and their grade level expectations.
The participants also earned continuing learning units.
