Norco woman recalls experience as DHS’ first homecoming queen

Although it was 74 years ago, Sadie Digirolamo Trosclair still recalls her surprise when she learned she’d been named Destrehan High School’s first homecoming queen.

The Norco resident is 93 now, but her face still bears the youthful countenance from her graduation photographs and the thrill of bearing what she still considers an honor for her school.

“I was shocked,” Trosclair said.

The second of six brothers and sisters, Trosclair’s mother wasn’t even sure what her daughter would wear for this recognition. But her older sister volunteered her new dress for the occasion, which was a pretty blue outfit with a cape and cap.

Trosclair has no photographs from that time, but she still has her school newspaper, called the Echo.

Each graduate’s biography was included and Trosclair’s bio outlined her being born in Kenner, coming to DHS in sixth grade, being a band member for five years, as well as a contributor to the Echo staff in her senior year.

During her junior year, she was elected queen by popular vote for the school’s first homecoming.

As an ideal senior girl, Digirolamo was recognized for her “shape.” The paper also has the class motto, which was, “On the violin of life, we play the chords of success.”

The Echo also offered this big news for the year: “Supt. J.B. Martin informed a very surprised audience that Mr. Harry Hurst has been appointed principal of DHS and that A.A. Songy would begin his duties as supervisor of St. Charles Parish Schools very soon.”

“I was all excited,” she said of the news about her being named homecoming queen.

It also was especially exciting for her with her brother, Nick Digirolamo, being a football star on the team, too. “I was so surprised I really didn’t think I’d make it, but there were so many others.”

Trosclair recalled the dance.

“I do remember it rained and rained and rained,” she said.Trosclair relived those days when her great granddaughter Courtney Bergeron was named homecoming queen for Hahnville High School, and then again later at college.

“She knew I had been queen and she called to say, ‘Mawmaw, I was picked to be queen.’ She was all excited about it.”Trosclair said she remembers it like a dream, but it did come back to her more when she found the Echo and it all seemed so real.
