Norco students make a sweet deal

Helped Children’s Hospital of New Orleans by collecting nearly 40K pieces of candy

Norco Elementary School’s candy drive for Children’s Hospital of New Orleans recently collected 36,579 pieces of candy. Principal Becky Weber said, as a school, they decide each year what nonprofit organizations they will support.

Since many of the children use Children’s Hospital, this one was chosen among them.

“This information is shared with our families,” Weber said. “We support nonprofit organizations that we know our families need.”

Weber said it also aligns with the school’s “District Learner Goals” to contribute to society to help others.

“We believe it is important to contribute to help in the well-being of others,” she said.

By collecting at least 25,000 pieces of candy, the school got six free tickets to “Boo at the Zoo.”

But the students went above and beyond in the collection.

Weber said this year’s total sets the record for a cause they’ve participated in numerous years.

Also, new to this year’s drive, was a child got a chance for the zoo tickets with every bag of individually wrapped candy donated. So a child had a shot at the tickets even if they brought one bag.

Three students’ names were drawn and they each won two tickets.

This year’s winners are: Reed Howard, Eva Braud and Brayden Evans.

Audubon Zoo’s annual “Boo at the Zoo” was sold out three days of its four-day Halloween extravaganza that featured trick-or-treat houses with candy, a Ghost Train and games held in October.
