Local salon gives important gift to adopted cancer patient

Salon owner Yolanda Triche has a good reason to be proud of her Hair Illusions’ staff.

After all, the Boutte business raised $1,200 during a breast cancer association Cut-A-Thon and has recently adopted a cancer patient who lost her hair due to chemotherapy treatments.

“In an effort to give back to the community, our salon has adopted Theresa Folse and donated a wig to her,” said Yolanda. “We will be assisting her with the upkeep of the wig during her treatment period and until her hair grows back.

“I am very proud of my staff and their hard work and compassion for this cause.”

Yolanda adds that the salon’s reasons for supporting such a widespread cause hit close to home.

“My mom, who died, had two different types of cancer ten years ago, with breast cancer being one,” she said. “Breast cancer wasn’t the one that killed her, but my daughter Danielle and I have wanted to raise money for the cause ever since.”

It has taken the Triche family years of courage to deal with the loss of Yolanda’s mother, but participating in Cut-A-Thons has helped them cope.

“Danielle has participated in raising money for the cancer society over the years with other salons and she’s talked about getting us involved ever since we opened up Hair Illusions four years ago,” Yolanda said. “This year something rose up in both of us and we pulled it together. And we praise God for our success.”

Triche says that giving a wig to a cancer patient and maintaining it for them during treatment will help that person feel better about the tough disease that they are facing.

“My mom worried about losing her hair and I remember watching her cry when it started to fall out,” she said. “We did everything to make her feel better. To us, donating this wig helps to make one cancer patient’s life a little easier.”
