Annemarie McMillan, a J.B. Martin Middle School student, recently returned from Orlando where her artwork was displayed at the National Jr. Beta Convention.
J.B. Martin Middle School’s Jr. Beta Club attended the 41st Annual Louisiana Jr. Beta Convention at the Cajundome in Lafayette in February.
McMillan represented her school in the “Pastel or Charcoal” category of the convention’s Visual Arts Competition with a charcoal piece she titled “Routine.” She was awarded fourth place in the state of Louisiana and later received an invitation to compete and display her artwork at the 2017 National Junior Beta Club Convention held in June at Disney World.
The piece, which she created in her Talented Art class under the direction of teacher Summer McCune, depicts the feet of a dancer wearing one pointe shoe to represent ballet and one high-top tennis shoe to represent hip hop.
McMillan, a dancer who is a member of the competition team at Dance Unlimited, enjoys many styles of dance and wanted the piece to represent her as a dancer.
The title “Routine” takes on two meanings: a dance number is often referred to as a dance routine and her afterschool routine consists of going to at least one dance class daily.
With more than 450,000 active members and more than 8,750 clubs nationally and internationally, the National Beta Club promotes “the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students.” It is the “largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization in America.”
