Hurst eighth graders Paige Duplantis and Paris Vinnett were both honored by the Heroes in Training National Award program sponsored locally by Esplanande Mall and PBS during an event that also featured Radio Disney. The Heroes in Training Award is designed to honor children who already give back to their community. Throughout the entire Greater New Orleans area, three students were selected to be recognized for their volunteer efforts.
Duplantis was recognized with the First Place Heroes in Training Award for her work with the Hurst Middle LaBranche Wetland Watchers service-learning project. She volunteered over 140 hours during the last school year speaking at outreach events, planting, cleaning, clearing and inspiring all of those around her. She also spearheaded a fundraising program to assist Hurricane Katrina victims, collecting over $300. Paige received a $250 gift card to the Esplanade Mall and selected the LaBranche Wetland Watchers to receive a $250 donation.
Vinnett was a runner-up for the top award for her hard work with the Wetland Watchers, volunteering over 100 hours and participating in a special program to be a student trainer for the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation. Paris received a $100 gift card to the Esplanade Mall as an award for her dedication.
“We are excited to teach young people about the importance of volunteering and to continue demonstrating The Esplanade’s commitment to the community through our “Heroes in Training” program,” said Anne Mialaret Reed, Director of Marketing for the Esplanade.
“I am so proud of all of my students. It is such an honor to see Paige and Paris honored through such a wonderful initiative,” said Harry Hurst teacher Barry Guillot.
