History came alive at Heritage Day

Students and adults flocked to Destrehan Plantation on May 14 for the annual Spring Heritage Day and Civil War Encampment.

In addition to the total encampment and artillery,  demonstrations included open-hearth cooking, bousillage construction, herbal healing, indigo dyeing, calligraphy, moss mattress making, antique toys and games, carpentry, period music and dancing, spinning, weaving, blacksmithing and quilting.

Destrehan Plantation was recently awarded a 2010 Travel and Tourism Industry Louey Award for Travel Attraction of the Year after completing several high-profile projects that set them apart from the competition.

The plantation beat out 24 other attractions, which were all judged by out-of-state judges.
