The older I get, the more I realize that there are very few situations or things in life that I will encounter that are certain or guaranteed, but it seems that there is one absolute we can count on these days – RAIN! I live in a duplex of of Highway 90 in Des Allemands and before the alarm clock goes off and I open my eyes in the morning, I can hear car and truck tires sliding past my house on the slick roadway and I know that my day will be overshadowed by gloomy skies.

Which, for the most part, actually doesn’t bother me as much as you think it would.

You see, the air conditioner in my 4-door sedan went kaput, so a little cloud cover is like a gift from the heavens.

On a typical summer day, I drive around the parish with my windows rolled down, blinded by the sun’s ultraviolet rays fanning myself with old newspapers or any other miscellaneous item I can find on the floorboard of my vehicle.

And on a really hot day – you know, one of those stuffy days where the heat index reaches unbearable – you might catch a glimpse of me at a traffic light embarking on swear mode as the small beads of sweat start to form on my forehead and the cars in front of take off when the light turns green at a turtle’s pace.

I am not saying that I break the law and speed around town, but after sitting at a red light, I have to build momentum quickly to get the air flowing.

As you read this, you are probably wondering why I don’t just pop in at one of our friendly repair shops and fix the problem.

Well, my friends, that is easier said than done.

You see, when I started college I purchased a brand new, yet “affordable” vehicle, and as it turns out, the car is – in my opinion – sort of a lemon.

Everything from engine sensors to the transmission, and now the air conditioner, has turned sour.

And the parts on this “affordable” mode of transportation have turned out to be not so affordable.

So when the sky begins to darken and the thunder rolls, I take in a deep sigh of relief because I know that for a short time the heat will subside and I can drive in some comfort.

I get so excited when the sprinkles begin to fall that, who knows, the next time you’re fighting with your umbrella while getting out of your car, you may look over a see me sticking my head out of my care window – or better yet, I might lose all my marbles and you’ll see me dancing in the rain!
