Hahnville High School principal Ken Oertling has been announced as a finalist for Louisiana Principal of the Year.
Oertling will join a panel of ten finalists who will be interviewed by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education later this month.
The winner will be announced in July and will go onto the national principal of the year competition.
Although Oertling has been personally recognized as a finalist for principal of the year, he said the recognition is a sign of the hard work the teachers and staff members at Hahnville have put in over his years there.
“I was ecstatic. Obviously it is a huge honor for a school and district and true reflection of what we do here at HHS. It is reflection of everyone’s hard work and the amount of hours teachers put into implementing our initiatives,” he said. “If you look at it, they wouldn’t award a principal at a school that didn’t show growth. It is really an honor for our school.”
Oertling has spent his entire career at Hahnville where he started off as a science teacher and coach before moving on to serve as an administrative monitor and assistant principal. He was named principal of the school in 2010.
“This is actually the first year I would have been eligible. At the state level you have to be a principal for four years first,” he said.
Oertling is a member of the American Association of School Administrators, Knights of Columbus, Louisiana Association of Principals, Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators, Louisiana High School Athletic Association, National Association of Black Secondary Educators and Veterans of Foreign Affairs.
All finalists will be honored at the 8th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Symposium and Celebration on July 12 in Baton Rouge.
